Did the US use any other Diesel engines in WW2 tanks besides the Guiberson Radial and GM 6046.?
Are these 2 diesel engines the only ones used by US Tanks in WW2. I know the GM 6046 is made from (X2) GM 6-71 Grey Marine Diesel engines & I think the Guiberson is a air-cooled 2 stroke (Not Sure) diesel Radial (possibly an Aero engine).
Were air cooled engines prone to overheating in Tanks (esp. in Pacific Theatre) and would the Sentinel Tank been better with (X2 Guiberson Radials on common crankshaft or GM 6046 as used in Lend lease M3 Tanks. Why did America shy away from Diesel engines.Were they too expensive, new type of engines in tanks, logistics made it hard to use anything else than petrol (gasoline for you yanks) or other. The reason I ask is there were many advantages for a diesel engine in a Tank and seems wierd they didn't adopt diesel engines till post WW2 Tanks (I think). Cheers John
